UGC Chairman congratulates Professor Charles Kao for being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics

The Chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC), The Hon. Mrs Laura M. Cha, extends her warmest congratulations to the former Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Charles K. Kao, for being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics this year.

Mrs Cha said, "The pivotal role of Professor Charles Kao in bringing about a revolution in fibre optics has contributed significantly to the advancement of technology. It is indeed gratifying to learn that Professor Kao's fascinating scientific discoveries and achievements have won the recognition of one of the most prestigious international awards. We have all benefited from Professor Kao's relentless enthusiasm in scientific research, and his many facets of contribution to Hong Kong's higher education."

"The UGC is committed to promoting research within the UGC sector, and is fully aware of the need for sustained investments in building up the research capability of the institutions. The $18 billion Research Endowment Fund established this year will allow our institutions to have access to considerably more funds for research, which will be important for the future development of the institutions and Hong Kong as a whole", added the UGC Chairman.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on October 6 that Professor Kao was awarded half of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2009 for his groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication.
