What is the existing arrangement on the provision of student hostels?
- According to the Government's prevailing hostel arrangement, the criteria used for calculating the level of provision of publicly-funded students hostels at the UGC-funded universities include all undergraduate students be given the opportunity to stay in student hostel for at least one year; all research postgraduates students, non-local students as well as undergraduate students whose daily travelling time exceeds four hours, be provided with student hostel places. As both the Lingnan University and The Education University of Hong Kong were provided with student hostel places which is 50% of their respective full-time degree student population, the above criteria are not applicable to them.
- The actual allocation of hostel places among students is within the prerogative of the UGC-funded universities under the Government's overall policy framework. UGC-funded universities are responsible for determining and implementing the allocation mechanism. They would continue to attach great importance to the needs of different students.
