How does the UGC strengthen the research development in Hong Kong?

The UGC strongly believes in "excellence" and that "competition drives excellence", as proven over and again in other aspects of our society, and in other parts of the world. To stay competitive in the globalised higher education sector, the UGC continuously seeks to motivate and reward excellent research of our universities.

As elucidated in the “Aspirations for the Higher Education System in Hong Kong” report, the UGC has introduced greater competitiveness in allocating research funding and research postgraduate places, and implemented Research Assessment Exercise, in order to promote excellent research in the UGC-funded universities. These arrangements serve to improve the allocation of research funding and to proactively underpin the development of research in Hong Kong.
