Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme
To further step up the regime for supporting outstanding Hong Kong student-athletes, the University Grants Committee (UGC) has launched the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme (SALSA Scheme) to support outstanding athletes who aspire to pursue dual-track career developments in the eight UGC-funded universities in the 2022/23 to 2024/25 triennium, with a commitment of up to HK$100 million for allocation among the eight UGC-funded universities.
Building on the successful outcome of the Memoranda of Understanding signed between the Hong Kong Sports Institute and the UGC-funded universities over the past few years, the SALSA Scheme will facilitate the admission of outstanding Hong Kong athletes and provide support to them at UGC-funded universities as follows:
- Admission: The UGC-funded universities will introduce direct admission schemes or streamline existing admission channels targeted for prospective students with remarkable achievements in sports; and
- Learning support: The UGC-funded universities will offer personalised support to student-athletes at central and individual levels, such as the appointment of Student-Athlete Support Coordinators for one-stop guidance and support from admission to graduation, as well as additional personal teaching assistants to enhance academic support for student-athletes at the individual level.
Funding is provided to universities in the form of (i) Central Support Grant of HK$1 million for each university per academic year (AY); and (ii) Individual Support Grant at a rate of HK$150,000 per student-athlete, with exact amount to be disbursed to each university based on the actual enrolment number of student-athletes in active study for undergraduate programmes in each AY.
