Internationalisation and engagement with Mainland China

In an age of rapid globalisation and intense regional and international competition, the UGC sees internationalisation and engagement with Mainland China as the key to Hong Kong's future, and believes that it should be actively pursued by the UGC-funded universities.

The eight UGC-funded universities have jointly set up the Heads of Universities Committee's Standing Committee on Internationalisation (HUCOMSCI) and established the “Study in Hong Kong” brand to attract more students from outside Hong Kong to pursue further studies in Hong Kong. The Education Bureau the UGC Secretariat have further strengthened collaboration with HUCOMSCI, actively enhancing the publicity and promotion of the “Study in Hong Kong” brand as well as expanding the international network and recruiting more students from different regions to pursue further studies in Hong Kong.

To support the universities in stepping up their efforts in this aspect, the UGC has allocated funding for HUCOMSCI to participate in and organise various overseas publicity and promotion activities, such as participating in international higher education exhibitions, including Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) Conference and Exhibition, NAFSA: Association of International Educators (NASFA) Annual Conference and European Association for International Education (EAIE) Conference and Exhibition.

The UGC also introduced the "Funding Scheme for Mainland and Global Engagement and Student Learning Experience" to allow universities to provide more overseas exchange and learning opportunities and enhance cross-cultural exchanges on campus to create a diverse and inclusive international learning environment.

Hong Kong's future critically depends upon the international capabilities and outlook of our students. Attracting quality non-local students to study in Hong Kong will further internationalise our higher education sector and increase the exposure of our local students. Moreover, attracting and retaining non-local talents to live and work in Hong Kong will enhance the quality of our population and the overall competitiveness of Hong Kong in the long run.
