Chair, 2023 UGC Teaching Award Selection Panel at the Presentation Ceremony of the 2023 UGC Teaching Award (27.9.2023)

Tim, Council Chairmen, Presidents, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening. It is my greatest honor to serve as the Selection Panel Chair for the prestigious 2023 UGC Teaching Award which venerates the stellar accomplishments of our exceptional educators in the UGC sector.

2. As our UGC Chairman suggested, the Selection Panel had a difficult task in selecting the awardees. After reviewing 20 nominations from the universities, we shortlisted six finalists for interviews. The panel is unanimous in agreeing that all of them have demonstrated exceptional acumen and passion in teaching and we had an extremely challenging time in choosing the awardees among such outstanding finalists. Let us recognise all the finalists for their dedication and commitment to teaching excellence by giving them a round of applause.

3. Without further ado, I am pleased to announce the results of the 2023 UGC Teaching Award. The awardees this year are:

  1. Mr David Bishop from HKU for the General Faculty Members category;
  2. Professor Lik Hang Tsui from CityU for the Early Career Faculty Members category; and
  3. The Internationalisation at Home Team from PolyU for the Collaborative Teams category led by Professor Engle Angela Chan, with Dr Arkers Wong, Mr Timothy Lai, Dr Betty Chung and Dr Doris Leung as team members.
Congratulations to our awardees and let us give them a round of applause.

4. Mr David Bishop is an Associate Professor of Teaching at the Faculty of Business and Economics of HKU. He has demonstrated exceptional teaching, innovation, and dedication to students' success. His commitment to actively engage in real-world problem-solving and decision-making has led to various experiential learning courses across multiple disciplines. They provided students with the opportunity to gain insights into the intricacies of real-world business and legal problems, cultivated empathy, leadership and social responsibility among them.

5. Professor Lik Hang Tsui is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chinese and History of CityU. He has pioneered innovative digital learning in history education, leveraging his expertise in digital humanities to engage students with original historical texts and advanced digital tools. Through his work, he revitalises history education with technology, empowering the next generation with knowledge, digital literacy, and reasoning skills.

6. The Internationalisation at Home (IaH) Team from the School of Nursing of PolyU has proactively improved the nursing programme curriculum since 2015 to prepare nursing students for the complex multi-cultural context of Hong Kong. They have designed online student-led group activities with overseas institutions as an alternative to overseas exchange. The team has pioneered the adoption of an IaH approach in nursing education and developed a new pedagogy model that deepens cultural awareness and global competence.

7. Once again, may I congratulate this year's awardees and their universities, and thank my colleagues on the Selection Panel for their valuable contributions. Last but not least, may I thank you all for your dedication to education, and for your commitment to passing the torch to the next generation of educators.
