Welcoming Speech by Dr Alice Lam

Chief Executive, ladies and gentlemen and students,

I am very pleased to attend this commissioning ceremony of the Fifth China Synergy Programme for Outstanding Youth. I am excited to see that over 230 students, representing more than 16 countries, have this fantastic opportunity to learn more about China and Chinese culture.

First, I would like to express my warmest welcome to our guests who have just arrived in Hong Kong. Although you come from all over the world, you are all descendents of the dragon and you are about to embark on a journey of discovery about your roots on the soil of your motherland ?who you are and where you come from.

For those of you who were born outside China, although you are no doubt aware that China has become a manufacturing powerhouse and an emerging consumer colossus, your images of China maybe mainly derived from hearing what other people have said, reading various sources of literature and following the news. But witnessing her for yourself beats reading a hundred commentaries. I hope that, after this journey, China will come to life before you vividly. She will no longer be a nebulous country that exists on the other side of the planet, but a concrete and real place with a people and culture that you are proud to call part of your heritage.

For those of you who come from the Mainland or Hong Kong, I am sure this trip will deepen your understanding of your own country and culture. It is also a wonderful opportunity for you to learn more about other countries from your fellow delegates, and help others understand China and Hong Kong.

Through the eye-opening experiences of the next fortnight, you will immerse yourself in Chinese culture, hospitality, and equally importantly, cuisine. You will see China, her modernization and her historical monuments, learn more about Chinese culture, listen to lectures about China, mix with outstanding youths not only from Mainland China or Hong Kong but from all over the world. It is a unique opportunity to absorb all things Chinese.

The core of the programme is its people and the languages of the programme are friendship and understanding. To gain the most from the journey, I have one word of advice - be open with your hosts and your fellow delegates. Like you, they are looking for friendship, a sympathetic ear and an opportunity to learn about other places. I hope this journey will let you forge friendships and engender memories that will last a lifetime.

Finally, CSP5 is made possible by the work of the Organizing Committee, the generosity of the sponsors, unfailing support and encouragement from private and government organizations and individuals. I would like to express my wholehearted gratitude and deepest thanks to all the people involved.

Thank you.
