The Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) Public Symposium 2022 was held today (December 11) at the University of Hong Kong. The project teams of 12 TRS projects funded in the sixth and seventh rounds of the TRS exercises showcased their discoveries as well as the social and economic impacts of the research projects on themes of strategic importance (including understanding and prevention of diseases, development of sustainable environment, emerging research and innovations important to Hong Kong) to over 150 participants at the Symposium.

The objective of the TRS is to focus academic research efforts of the University Grants Committee-funded universities on themes of strategic importance for the long-term development of Hong Kong. Twelve rounds of the TRS exercises have been conducted so far.

The Chairman of the Research Grants Council (RGC), Professor Wong Yuk-shan, praised the outstanding research efforts of the local universities at the opening ceremony of the symposium and was excited to see a wide range of ground-breaking discoveries by the project teams, including breakthroughs in cancer detection and therapies and drug discoveries, as well as creation of frontier knowledge and innovative technology in sustaining the environment, imaging and spectroscopy and digital learning.

"Many of these projects have made significant achievements and technological breakthroughs, which have been translated into practical applications in clinical, environmental and educational aspects, contributing to the betterment of society while reaffirming Hong Kong's pre-eminent position in academic research excellence. Some novel discoveries have also been licensed or patented locally and internationally, bringing economic benefits to Hong Kong," said Professor Wong.

The TRS Public Symposium 2022 featured presentations, poster display and demonstrations, which offered opportunity for the sharing of ideas among participants. Details of the event and research projects are available on the RGC website (www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/about/events/symposium/symposium22.html).
