UGC Chairman mourns passing of Professor Charles Kao

The Chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC), Mr Carlson Tong, today (September 26) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Professor Charles Kao and extended his deepest condolences to Professor Kao's family.

Mr Tong said, "Professor Kao was a visionary scientist and an inspirational educator. As the Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from 1987 to 1996, he laid down a solid foundation for CUHK to develop into the world-class comprehensive and research-led university it is today. His remarkable contributions to the development of science and technology have not only changed the world but also inspired generations of students and the global community."

"Professor Kao is the pride of Hong Kong people and will be remembered for his significant contributions to the world."
