Project Title: Caregiving Research and Development Centre (SFU)

Abstract

The Caregiving Research and Development Centre (CRC) is dedicated to supporting unpaid caregivers (mainly family members and relatives) who assist the frail elderly, children and adults with disabilities in Hong Kong—a region experiencing a rise in its aging population and chronic health conditions. These caregivers often endure significant physical, psychological, and financial burdens, which can lead to severe trauma and adverse outcomes due to the intense stress and workload involved in caring for dependent individuals. Current research on caregiving within Chinese communities is limited and tends to overlook the caregivers in favour of the care recipients. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a shift in caregiving policies, practices, and services that are centered around caregivers and reflect the socio-cultural specifics of Hong Kong.

The CRC intends to employ an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional approach to bolster academic research, policy development, service enhancement and capacity building of professionals. The center will investigate the diverse needs of caregivers, the challenges and rewards they face daily, their methods of managing stress, and ways they can be empowered. Additionally, the CRC will frequently hold conferences and seminars/workshops, collaborate with a variety of institutions and professionals, and leverage its research findings to create innovative solutions to caregiving challenges. The goal is to achieve meaningful impacts that not only benefit caregivers but also enhance the capabilities of practitioners and influence policy making.
