RGC Public Lectures - Mass Communication and Social Media

Two leading scholars have been invited to deliver public lectures organized by the Research Grants Council on 2 February 2020 (Sunday). Details of the lectures are as follows:

First Session

Topic: Who should be gatekeeping social media content?
Speaker: Mr Raymond Li

Brief introduction:

Rapid popularity of social media has caused disruptive changes to the traditional landscape of mass communication. Media organisations are no longer monopolising the information distribution channels, media professionals also lose their exclusive roles in content gatekeeping, so who should be the content gatekeepers in the era of social media? Mr Raymond Li will share his view in his talk, "Who should be gatekeeping social media content?"


About the Speaker:

Raymond Li is also currently the Director of Master of Social Science in Media Management programme at HKBU. Before joining HKBU in August 2016, Raymond had worked at BBC World Service in London for more than 25 years. He was responsible for launching BBCChinese.com in 1999, and became the first native Chinese in charge of BBC Chinese Service in 2009.

 

Second Session

Topic: Still believe in me? A scrutiny of Hong Kong's mass communication and social media
Speaker: Dr Fu King Wa
Time: 2 February 2020 (Sunday) 11:30am - 12:30pm


Brief introduction:

Much has been said about "fake news" and "post-truth." Dr Fu King Wa will deliver a talk titled "Still believe in me? A scrutiny of Hong Kong's mass communication and social media" to give an overview of the Hong Kong mass communication and social media landscape and provide some suggestions on how to be a smart media user.


About the Speaker:

Dr Fu King Wa is an Associate Professor at the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC), The University of Hong Kong. His research interests cover political participation and media use, health and the media, and younger generation's Internet use.
