First Session

Topic: Contributing to the Development of Hong Kong into a Global Fintech Hub
Speaker: Professor Tam Kar Yan

Brief introduction:

Hong Kong has a competitive edge in Fintech to develop its own insights and strategy most suited to the trajectory of its economy. By engaging in research that aims to develop a deep understanding of the interplay between technology and financial services, we are building an intellectual foundation of a strategy on Fintech for Hong Kong. Professor Tam will deliver a talk on “Contributing to the Development of Hong Kong into a Global Fintech Hub” to share his views on how this strategy needs to address fundamental issues related to the impact of Fintech on individual investors, financial institutions, regulators, and society as a whole.


About the Speaker:

Professor Kar Yan Tam is the Dean of HKUST Business School. He is a founding member of the School and an accomplished information systems scholar. Under his leadership, the HKUST Business School is moving ahead with several major academic plans, including FinTech, entrepreneurship, and innovations. He currently heads a team of interdisciplinary scholars to work on a major Fintech project funded by the Research Grants Council under the Theme-based Research Scheme. Professor Tam has also played an active role in promoting academia-business collaborations and startups. He is appointed to a number of education and policy groups including the Curriculum Development Council (Chairman), the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board, the Hong Kong Productivity Council. He served on the Steering Group of Financial Technologies of HKSAR and was the President of the Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools in 2018.

Second Session

Topic: How Will the FinTech Movement Change the World of Financial Services?
Speaker: Professor CHAN Chun Kwong

Brief introduction:

Fintech is defined as the application of technology to improve the level of financial services provided to customers. The technology includes Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Open API and Virtual Banking, etc. Professor Chan will give a talk titled “How will the FinTech Movement Change the World of Financial Services?” to share his experience with the audience.


About the Speaker:

Prior to joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong as Professor of Practice in FinTech starting September 2018, Prof. CHAN Chun Kwong has been the Chief Information Officer, Retail Banking & Wealth Management, Asia Pacific at HSBC since 2015. From 2012-2015, Professor Chan was the Global Head of Digital Mobile and Channels Engineering at HSBC, having led the direction and engineering of banking applications in implementing the Digital strategy for HSBC globally. He joined HSBC in Vancouver, Canada in 1990 to help start up the Group Development Centre for HSBC, and moved back to Hong Kong in 2007 to take up key IT management positions at HSBC Asia Pacific.

Professor Chan has won numerous innovation awards by IDC, Asian Bankers, etc. and currently serves on the Innovation and Technology Fund Research Projects Assessment Panel, Hong Kong SAR Government.

Professor Chan obtained his Bachelor of Science Engineering degree from University of Hong Kong , Master of Business Administration from Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Doctor of Business Administration from City University of Hong Kong.
