comment: ideally, submissions would be in the form of a single HTML or XML document which could be appropriately viewed on-screen through a style sheet including a suitable “@media screen { ... }” declaration, or printed using a suitable “@media print { ... }” declaration. This would, no doubt, impose an unrealistic burden on contributors to do the markup. Therefore, we ask for electronic submissions in MS Word format, though other word-processing formats can be accepted. Any intending participants who wish to make their submission also in HTML format are encouraged to do so. Please follow the guidelines below, as far as possible, to facilitate the publication of the proceedings of the conference, in print and CD-ROM form. Please do not send submissions in PowerPoint format, even if you have it in mind to use presentation software during the conference itself.

submissions using a word-processor

cover sheet(s)

A cover document should be provided (not more than two pages) as follows:

[author's name]

[author's institutional address]

[co-author(s) if any]

[co-author's institutional address]

[title of submission]

[subtitle of submission (if any)]

[number of words]

[Abstract]

[Keywords]

Submissions must include at least this cover document. It would be helpful if they also included a (draft) text, though this is not necessary. Obviously, “number of words” is not needed if no text is given at this stage.

text

Text should be set in 11 point Times New Roman, single-spaced, unjustified and not hyphenated. The first line of each paragraph should be indented by three spaces, except for the first paragraph in a section, which should have the first line set flush left. Paragraphs should not be separated by an extra space. Use the em-dash (—), if needed (rather than two hyphens). Do not use underlining.

quotations

Use (smart) single quotation marks by default (quotes within quotes require double quotation marks). Long quotations (three lines or more) should be set in 10 point Times New Roman, with no quotation marks, separated by extra leading from the text above and below, and indented by three spaces at left and right. For references, employ the author-date system (see the Chicago Manual of Style).

headings

All headings should be marked as such. (This can be done in MS Word by using Outlining. The title of the contribution should be a first level heading, and subheadings second or third etc.) The title should be set in 14 point Times New Roman, centred, upper case. Second level headings should be set in 11 point Times New Roman, centred, with initial capitals. Third level headings, if required, should be set in 11 point Times New Roman, flush left, with initial capitals. (Styles for headings can be set in MS Word by using “Style” in the fomat menu.)

index

It will be helpful if authors submit a list of words or phrases from their contribution which they think should be indexed.

Please use the style illustrated below:

References to Web sites should be accompanied by a date of retrieval in the form “(retrieved: 2 December 2000)”.

notes

Use the author-date system. Do not use op.cit. or loc.cit. However, ibid. may be used when the reference is found in an immediately preceding note.

submissions also in HTML

Those who wish to make their submission also in HTML are welcome to do so. The following guidelines are suggested.

  • Follow HTML 4.x (loose, transitional or strict) or XHTML 1.x. Code may be validated with W3C's HTML Validation Service.
  • Do not use frames.
  • Do not use tables for fomatting, but only for any materials requiring tabulation.
  • Avoid formatting markup in the body of the document, as far as possible. However, <em> may be used for emphasis and <strong> for bold.
  • To the extent that sizes need to be specified, use relative rather than absolute values (e.g. “width: 15em” or “font-size: x-small” or “margin-left: 10%”).
  • Use the em-dash (—) rather than two hyphens (this can be inserted as “&#151;”).
  • Use structural markup (e.g. <h1>, <h2>, etc. for headings, <p> for paragraphs. Do not omit the closing </p>).
  • Notes should be inserted after the text and before the references. They may be flagged by, for instance, note17 in the text with an internal link to the target (“<a href=“#note17>”).
