RESEARCH EXPENDITURE AND
FUNDING IN THE 1998-2001 TRIENNIUM
The 1998-2001 triennium saw healthy and robust development
in research amongst the UGC-funded institutions, both in terms of quantity
and quality.
During the 1998-2001 triennium, institutions' aggregate
expenditure on research increased substantially, both in terms of absolute
amount and as a percentage of Hong Kong's GDP (Figure 4.1). UGC and RGC
funding for research in the 1998-2001 triennium, in the form of block
grants and earmarked grants respectively, continued to constitute a substantial
part in research funding for institutions (Figure 4.2)
