What is the Government existing policy on the provision of student hostels?

  • Under the Government's existing student hostel policy promulgated in 1996, all local undergraduate students should be given the opportunity to stay in student hostels for at least one year. Also, all research postgraduate and non-local students, and undergraduate students whose daily travelling time exceeds four hours should also be provided with hostel places.

  • In 2006, the Government approved the provision of an additional 1,840 publicly-funded student hostel places in recognition of the increasing demand from non-local exchange students and the need to support institutions' student exchange activities.

  • Provision in Lingnan University and the Education University of Hong Kong are higher than others, in recognition of the former's mission to develop itself into a relatively small, fully residential liberal arts university, and the potential merits that hostel life brings in enhancing pre-service teacher education for the latter.
