What other measures are the UGC taking to enhance the teaching and learning quality of institutions? |
 |
 |
- The majority of the block grant allocated
by the UGC to institutions is for good
and effective teaching. In addition, the
UGC has been allocating Teaching Development
Grants (TDGs) to institutions since 1994,
to encourage institutions to adopt innovative
approaches to teaching and enrich the
learning environment. For the 2010/11
academic year, the UGC has earmarked a
total of $37.6 million as TDGs to UGC-funded
institutions.
- We encourage institutions to consider
adopting outcome-based approaches (OBA)
in student learning. OBA is a student-centred
approach, which helps institutions focus
their education efforts on achieving their
goals, with a view to improving the quality
of teaching and learning. The UGC is helping
the institutions embrace OBA by building
up their capacities and providing support,
including the provision of additional
funds to facilitate the release of staff
to weave "outcomes" into their academic
curricula.
- To honour those who excel in teaching
in the UGC sector, we have established
a UGC Teaching Award. The awardees will
become "ambassadors of good teaching" collectively
to make a real and sustained impact in
promoting teaching excellence in the UGC
sector. The inaugural Award was completed in September 2011. Two outstanding academics were given the UGC Teaching Award: Mr Richard A GLOFCHESKI (Associate Professor, Department of Law, The University of Hong Kong) and Professor POON Wai-yin (Professor, Department of Statistics & Associate Dean (Education), Faculty of Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong). More details can be found at : http://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/ugc/publication/press/2011/pr08092011.htm.
- Chapter 6 of the UGC's report titled
"Aspirations for the Hong Kong Higher
Education System in Hong Kong" (http://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/ugc/publication/report/her2010/her2010.htm)
has suggested a series of measures to
enhance teaching and learning.
