Two leading scholars have been invited to deliver public lectures organized by the Research Grants Council on 19 May 2018 (Saturday). Details of the lectures are as follows:

First Session

Topic: Can AI predict stock prices?
Speaker: Dr James Kwok
Time: 19 May2018 (Saturday) 2:30pm - 3:30pm


Brief introduction:

Stock markets are fraught with ups and downs. However, financial institutions and financial market experts still make profits from stock markets with their knowledge and strategies. Artificial intelligence (AI) can learn from past experience, adjust to new data, and make decisions better and faster than humans. Dr Kwok will deliver a talk on “Can AI predict stock prices?” to explain how to train AI and turn it into a full-fledged financial market expert.


About the Speaker:

James Kwok is an Associate Professor of Business Education in the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics, and Operations Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He obtained his PhD degree from Imperial College London in 1997, joined HKUST in 1997 as Assistant Professor, and became Associate Professor at California State University, Long Beach in 2004. He returned to HKUST in 2005 and has stayed there since then. He has published more than 60 journal and conference papers. His current research focuses on neural networks for business applications.

Topic: AI/Fintech and their future impact to our daily lives

Brief introduction:

AI and Fintech bring benefits to our everyday life. Dr Chun will give a lecture titled "AI/Fintech and their future impact to our daily lives" to provide an overview of the current and potential developments of AI and Fintech, as well as their potential risks to our daily lives. He will also explore the privacy, security and moral/ethical issues arising from the use of these technologies.

Dr Chun has also been a senior advisor to the HK Government on AI and IT strategies. Dr Chun is also the Convenor for the Hong Kong Computer Society's AI Specialist Group.
