Two leading scholars have been invited to deliver public lectures organized by the Research Grants Council on 10 December 2017 (Sunday). Details of the lectures are as follows:

First Session

Topic: Will calcium supplement really rescue your bone quality?
Speaker: Dr Kelvin Yeung

Brief introduction:

It is commonly believed that a variety of supplements, such as calcium and magnesium, is able to help reinforce bone's health. According to the literatures, magnesium can be beneficial to bone growth and plays a key role in bone remodelling and skeletal development. However, taking calcium supplement alone cannot improve bone's quality. Dr Yeung will give a lecture titled "Will calcium supplement really rescue your bone quality?" to explain the underlying mechanism and science to the general public.


About the Speaker:

Kelvin Yeung is passionate in orthopaedic biomaterial research for more than 15 years. His major research areas cover from the development of metallic and polymeric orthopaedic biomaterials, to bone implant design and development as well as musculoskeletal tissue engineering. He is currently the tenured associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, The University of Hong Kong. His h-index is 35 with more than 3,800 citations in 150+ peer-reviewed SCI journal papers and 38 filed full patents in various countries. During these years, he had received numbers of award and scholarship from local and regional competitions such as Young Scientist Award 2005 and Young Engineer Award 2009, respectively. The total amount of grants and sponsors directly arising from his projects in PI and Co-PI capacity is over HK$62M. Apart from the professional position, he has also appointed as Deputy Master of HKU Lap-Chee College so as to oversee the student education programs there.

Second Session

Topic: Technologies behind the BAT
Speaker: Professor Wong Kam-fai

Brief introduction:

Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent (collectively known as BAT) are widely used internet platforms today and provide searching, e-commerce and social networking services. Professor Wong will deliver a talk on “Technologies behind the BAT”, to introduce the basic technologies behind BAT, including Information Retrieval, Opinion Mining and Rumor Detection.


About the Speaker:

K.F. Wong obtained his PhD from Edinburgh University, Scotland, in 1987. After his PhD, he was researchers in Heriot-Watt University (Scotland), UniSys (Scotland) and ECRC (Germany). At present he is Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, Director, Centre for Innovation and Technology (CINTEC), and Associate Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He is also Honorary Professor, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen Graduate School), Adjunct Professor, School of Computer Technology, Peking University and Adjunct Professor, Northeastern University, Shenyang China.

His research interest focuses on Chinese computing, database and information retrieval. He has published over 250 technical papers in these areas in different international journals and conferences and books. He is a senior member of IEEE, fellows of BCS (UK), IEE (UK) and HKIE. He is the founding Editor-In-Chief of ACM Transactions on Asian Language Processing (TALIP), and International Journal on Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing. He is the General Chair of BigComp2016, NLPCC2015, IJCNLP2011, AIRS2008 and ICCPOL2006; the Finance Chair SIGMOD2007; and the PC Co-chair of lJCNLP2006. Also he has served as PC member of many international conferences.

K.F. is very active in professional activities in Hong Kong. He is the Founding Chairman of the Bridging Digital Divide in China (HK) Charity Foundation. Also, he serves as the Chairman, ICT Advisory Committee, HK Scout Association; Chairman, Organisation Committee, 2012 & 2013 HK ICT Awards; Member of the Consumer Council and Non-official Member, Member of the Airport Technology Advisory Council of the Hong Kong International Airport, Member of Radio Television Hong Kong Board of Advisors, Member of Hong Kong R&D Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) Expert Review Panel, Member of The Hong Kong Society for the Aged (SAGE) Advisory Committee on ICT Development.

He was awarded the Medal of Honour (MH) by the HKSAR Government in 2011 for his contribution in IT development in Hong Kong.
